Commercialization of digital storytelling

An integrated approach for cultural tourism, the Beijing Olympics and wireless VAS

Wu Qiongli

Beijing Blue Moon Valley Cultural Media, China

Digital Storytelling (DST) is an emergent multimedia expression format, which empowers ordinary people to explore their creativity through producing a 2–5 minute film based on personal stories. This new tool has been taken up internationally by education, community and media parties. This article explores Digital Storytelling's application and commercialization potential in China. The key argument is that a commercial operation of DST would be an appropriate means of integrating cultural tourism, the Beijing Olympics and wireless value-added services (VAS). The first section introduces the concept of Digital Storytelling – its history, definition and international practice. The second section focuses on the opportunities presented by the Chinese market and relevant digital content industries.

Key Words: Beijing Olympics • DIY • mobile content • wireless
